Blitz3D...Blitz3D SDK

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Blitz3D...Blitz3D SDK

How come you have to get another $100 to buy the Blitz3D SDK if you already have Blitz3D? Shouldn't it be like $20 if you already have Blitz3D? Or maybe it even be free? Like with BlitzMax: BlitzPlus users get MaxGUI free.

Sorry if this has been already brought up. And sorry if I missed the special-offer-of-blitz3dsdk-for-blitz3d-users note. (if there was one.)

Because that is what BRL is charging, simple as that.

I didn't think I was being obnoxious or anything. I was just asking. Thanks for the reply though...

I think the product is actually out-sourced to SkidRacer and he doesn't get money from Blitz3D sales so is under no obligation to offer a discount to those users.

I may have misunderstood the situation though so don't quote me on that one.

Well, BRL get $0 from me, instead of -something-. They're fine with that though.

people got gui for free because blitzplus was and still is a broken pile o poo.

The sdk is not dependent on blitz3d which was a great product... nor vice versa. So it looks perfectly normal as separate products costing the same to me. And is why I dropped the 100 dollars on it while owning every other blitz product as well.

Is Blitz3D SDK for Windows only or does it work on Mac and Linux too?

[edit]
Just checked it; it's only for Windows. It would be worth it if it was available for Linux and Mac too.

err, it's just a DirectX 7 interface, not really possible to use on Mac or Linux.

As for the original topic, why would they *not* charge for it?

They could have had a bang on the head?
...or,
It could contain a hidden virus, and they wantted to spread it to as many people as possible, take control of those computers launch hack attacks from them against nuclear power stations, and hold the world to ransom for one million dollars waaahahahaha

I do think you were obnoxious in the way you asked the question, sounded more like a condemnation to me. But since that was not the intent then my sincere apologies.

B3DSDK is useful for newcomers with previous techniques, for ppl like me, has been using B3D since it's out, there's no big reason to change.

Because most of your existing code/lib will need a big rewrite and it's still Win32 Only,

I do agree that Blitz3D SDK is too expensive at $100. For that reason, its my personal choice to not buy it for now, as I don't consider that it can do enough above and beyond what Blitz3D is currently capable of.

However...

It constantly amazes me that people expect it free just because they bought Blitz3D more than half a decade ago. What do you expect Mark to live on? Witchety grubs?

It's okay. I reread what I had put and can clearly see how that could be considered obnoxious, as well as immature. Sorry about that. :P

I just thought it a little expensive if we already have Blitz3D. All it is adding is the command sets from the other languages.

Actually I see a business requirement for the Blitz3D SDK. Today I just tried to run some modern 3D engines on my IBM work laptop and the graphics card "ATI Mobility Fire GL 9000" just blatantly failed to run any modern graphics.

Blitz3D however works on this PC smooth and fast, and with the Blitz3D SDK you can integrate exactly those smooth and fast 3D graphics into any "business" C++ program.

I wonder if it has to do with the fact what refabed gpu it uses and what drivers ;-)

Well, big global companies recycle their worker's PC's in a 3 year cycle, and the "ATI Mobility Fire GL 9000" didn't get any driver updates since 2004. Actually ATI doesn't even have that model listed on their driver page, I wonder if they ever had.

Ok. I give. What the heck is a witchety grub?

Sick.

MMMMMMmmmmm. Witchety grubs.

I think the B3D SDK is for C Programmers who have heared of the benefits of B3D and want to use it but can´t switch to Basic due to their reputation :).

heh :)

well i havent forked out the cash for this yet - i do think its a little pricey... though there have been many times when using b3d i simply wished i could use it from C++ and not have to deal with the limitations of basic.
If your a none blitz3d coder + want to bypass all the
grunt work required to wrap dx - then this is a steal..
so long as your not worried about being several generations behind in the gfx department..

I still stuck in limbo as far as coding goes - do i wait for
bmax3d? do i give torque another go? or do i finish my own gl engine?...meh - or perhaps i will just keep drawing scarey beasties... heh :p - er...what are we talking about again? :p

The FireGL chipsets, as its name implies, does not have DirectX (or even non-NT) drivers. BlitzMAX works on it if you force it to use OpenGL. As does the Quake 2 engine.

The FireGL cards will work with DirectX (I am using one here at work) but as it says on the tin, it works LOADS better with OpenGL as thats what it was designed for.
