So realplayer decides to nag me about getting an update.. so to sate it I say.. "Fine" and let it go check.. moments later.. it reports back that there are no updates...

WTF!

Realplayer has never done this before.. Why now? And why so dumbly..

It is attention seeking - I do that all the time.

www.filehippo.com - grab their rss feed, grab RealPlayer Alternative and never run a dodgy 'update' process in the background ever again.

well.. this was the first time.. and I don't feel like bothering with it. But still... If it ALWAYS did that.. I wouldn't have a problem.. it is just that it did it randomly.

RP Alternative is half the size, doesn't chew up background resources and can be used to view Real files in ANY DirectShow mediaplayer.

Yes, and? It asked you if it could look-see if there was an update, and there wasnt.
Abode does the same. Thats what it does.

I for example keep saying to myself, lets run a syncMods, and you know what. Sometimes there is, and somtimes the isint.

Whats the alternative? You give it open access behind yourfire wall, and it checks all the time?

so... what.. it is programmed to check once a decade?

yep ;)

[ok I dont know how often, but if you havent given it perrmission to always check, it'll ask every now and then]

yeah.. but I've had it, and not updated it, for YEARS... like.. since I got the computer in 2004...

Just to make your paranoia complete: real movies do support some kind of procedural exception that allows to run native code, therefor several viruses are floating around, based on real media content files. Scary stuff.

Not sure if Real Alternative is save, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's only a problem of the original realplayer.

BTW thre's also Quicktime Alternative. See free-codecs.com

Well at least you're honest about it.

me too! me too! ;-) lol

Real Alternative -IS- the original Real dlls, repackaged without the bloatware and given a DirectShow wrapper, basically. So yeh, any problem with security is replicated in Real Alternative (unless the security lack is due to RealPlayer or background tasks).
