Will BlitzMax run on iPhone? :O)
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Will BlitzMax run on iPhone? :O) I doubt it, but maybe more likely than running blitzmax on AppleTV.
The fact iPhone uses OSX / Safari makes me think it may have a desktop processor but I can't help thinking they have gone and used an ARM which means their OS ppl have been very busy and consequently made BlitzMax support a little on the unlikely side in the near future (that and we won't be getting them down under for atleast another year).

Yeah i also thought it's a little bit too early about a final answer to this but i just was curious after i've read about it - this could be a great market. Thanks for the info! :O)
Hmmm i don't know what Intel/IBM offers at the ultra low voltage front but if it's ARM would it help if you start the ARM project?
/me raising his arm slowly... ;O)

but, oh man, that phone is cool...
I guess I know my next toy is gonna be.. :p
If we could get BMax to run on it, would be even more sexy.. :p

It support widgets and any OSX software that is written for it specifically, so I imagine it wouldn't be too difficult to support assuming that it supports OpenGL or something.
Hmm Unity can produce widgets (but they also use openGL, they are more or less the same as the webplayer).

Well, so much for that one.
A big shame, in my opinion. Lots of little tiny flaws that just flat out suck. (And make no sense, considering the pointed claim that it "Runs Mac OS X").
I'm still quite skeptical of this iPhone. They probably have a ton of secret features, though, so I'll be keeping a close eye on it!

I bet it will do well and sell a lot of units. It isn't perfect, still no voice recognition instead of typing sms and so on, but it comes with some great enhancements which serve the core of a phone, an ipod and a communicator.
I've talked to people yesterday who have nothing in common with computers and didn't see a sense in buying new mobile phones as they are all more or less the same. For them this is a huge improvement and they are interested.
A quite interesting question will be the battery life of the tool.
A tiny percentage of the mobile market is huge!

It's more like a PDA with phone features. I'll be looking into getting one, but won't be using it as a phone though, cos you just know you'll get mugged if you're seen with one.
Maybe they'll gonna use a CoreSolo ULV U2100/U2200 with a TDP of 5Watt. Are 5Watt okay for a mobile phone? Plus the powerconsumption for the rest (display, gfx, ...). If this is successful i'm sure they will open it more for third party apps/games.
Does anyone know what the TDP of a 68040 at 25Mhz was? 5W sounds really great and i wanna go back to passive cooling in a simple way. I wonder if 17W also would be okay for a reliable passive solution which doesn't cost hundreds of dollars for the heatpipes.
Don't know but I do not see why it wouldn't - someone should do a small mac app and send it to Steve to see if it works or not.
Would be killa if it did!

Rumours say that the iPhone is ARM based...hey skidracer where are you?! :O)
Why would you want blitzmax to run ON the iPhone.. wouldn't you just want the programs it makes to run on it? Who the hell would want to code with a touchscreen mini-keyboard.
Doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of txting? In that you don't have to talk and make a lot of noise, and you have some secracy from those around you. (so you can txt a friend that he is being retarded and needs to shut up, so the other people don't know you told him) I mean... What else is txt for? If you have to talk to enter it, why not just call them?
still no voice recognition instead of typing sms

Excellent point! :D @DampeS8N
This is what i initially meant. Getting BlitzMax Programs running on the iPhone but till today with BlitzMax you need the destination platform also for compiling the source, so...
Regarding SMS i advise you to consult the net to get an idea what the purpose of SMS is. Now if i would like to send such a SMS i would prefer that it's as simple as possible. Typing in each letter doesn't sound like the proper solution to me.
Anyway i don't use a mobile phone on my own so go as you please.

the iphone is supposed to be closed first party only so it probably won't happen any time soon. Kind of cool that it supports multitouch so you could do something like dance dance revolution with your fingers, something that you can't do on the DS.
Apple has said that it took out over 200 patents to deliver its iPhone.
Good to see Patent abuse hasn't abated.
Yeah this also sounded insane to me. Well, there for sure will be enough trivial patents in this pack.

Good point but I wonder if when speec recognition becomes better and normal if texting will disappear. Another thing I find annoying is when I'm talking to someone person to person, they get a text and start just replying and ignoring you, that is so rude imho. So they may as well be talking (unless it's private) as it would be quicker and less rude. The ipod was on an arm processor but it wasn't osx. I would assume it would take a lot of time and effort to port to another cpu platform, like the switch from ppc to intel. It would be a pretty major move to put osx onto another cpu just for the sake of this iPhone platform. Maybe they really did go with a low-power powerpc chip or something.
Hmm why not? a) They were working since quite some time on this device, b) it's not the whole osx if you read through the article and c) they did an even bigger task with the move from ppc to intel and providing rosetta on top. Sounds quite manageable to me.
Seems from those websites that it's an ARM processor anyway, like the ipod.
So where's the blitmax arm compiler?

My wife and I both watched the full iPhone keynot speech last night. It is a pretty interesting device and certainly does seem to make existing devices look like something from the 80's. I do also notice though the absence of certain features which I am sure they are holding back for the sole purpose of knowing that, in future, they will come out with an upgraded superceding product that will then sell more units. The camera, although 2 mpixels, should've been a realtime firewire-like video camera able to record `full-screen` live footage, so that the phone has VIDEO conferencing like iChat, and I especially thought the voicemail should've been video clips left by callers, not to mention that calling someone on the phone at all shoud've given you a live video feed of that person. Also there was no sign of games which I am sure will be there in future, as well as OpenGL 3D. Also the orientation sensor only handles 2 positions, I really thought it shoud've been 360 degrees in all directions like a spherical compass as this would then allow the whole thing to be used as a virtual-reality device, ie wherever in the environment you point it, you see a 3D representation of what is there, with like maps and labels and language conversion and so on, also with an overlayed live and realtime-image-processed video feed. There's probably also some other features that could've and will in future be in there. That it has osX doesn't really mean a whole lot to the end user if the end user doesn't have a DESKTOP or such tools as graphics programs or slideshow features or a music visualiser or a word processor, and indeed a decent size hard drive. Is 4 and 8 gigs really going to be enough?
So anyway, it's really nice, but I see a definite plan to add more in future so that this model becomes obsolete. They think they can wow people just enough that they'll buy it, then the next time around they'll wow them even more, again just enough, for people to buy again. That's business for ya.

I think they hold some stuff back simply because it's not finished and some things will come time after time (upgrades, new models and so on). If you want to use the iPOD inside i would say the 8GB are a must.
I think if they really wanted to they could've put video capture in there plus a few other things since it's certainly feasible technology already. In my opinion they're holding some stuff back to leave room for future models.
Yep and beside such things there are the usual suspects like more memory, new colours, ...
Angel, remember that post by SimonH a couple of weeks ago???? :)
Seems like more than ever he needs to consider this now.
