REALbasic 5.2.4 free with this month's PC Format

Apparantly worth £79.00. Requires online registration that must be completed by end of July 2006.

From what I can tell from reading about it you can make games with it - appears to have its own 3D graphics engine. I Googled and found evidence of REALbasic games.

I'm going to install it and check it out.

I have 5.5, the 3D engine only supports the 3DMF format.

Sounds interesting "puki". Can you large it up to the latest version for free?

Nope. Still, £29.00 isn't bad.

From now until January 31, 2006, you can purchase REALbasic 2006 Standard Edition for only £ 29 or REALbasic Professional Edition for £ 178.

Ok. I'll give it a miss (already own more languages than I know what to do with!), but thanks for the info.

puki: would you mind confirming if you are coming to this or not (I couldn't email you as you don't have a valid email address in your profile):

RealBASIC was originally a Macintosh only develoment tool... it came over to Windows in relatively recent times...

now, i don't know about the pc side of things, but i 've licensed the Macintosh versions for a while now, and the 3D engine is minimal at best...

still, there's a knowledgeable guy named Joe Strout who has written a game engine for RB though, and the demo shows that nomatter what, games can be made with it...

I used REALbasic on the Mac for a while, the Windows version was very buggy, but I think they made a lot of improvement. RB is an interesting alternative to Visual Basic, but for games it's far too primitive, and isn't optimized enough.

Still a ripoff IMHO. Although I bought it years ago for some serious $$. It is a rather bloated language. Mainly good for apps. 2D capabilities are "okay" but rely on quicktime for handling sprites. The 3D is useless.

The only main benefit is that with the Windows version you can also compile Linux & MAC versions of your program on your PC.
