Would you hire this guy?

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Would you hire this guy?

Hello all. As you can see in my sig, I've bought myself a domain name a while back and now I've put up a portfolio site.
It's got some programming, drawing, photography and animation, with much more to come in the future.
What do you guys think of it? If you were working as top
brass in some company, would you hire someone as green
as me?

No.

Being FNG isn't a problem, we have hired few guys like that and they have proved to be very good "risk". But since you don't have any gamelike content / design images (low-poly modeling etc) on your site you wouldn't be considered for 3D / digital artist position at least.

I quite like the site layout.

Not sure if there is enough there yet to get you a job.

That RPG editor looks interesting. If you finish that then you will raise your profile.

some nice photos

I'd remove the guestbook if I were you. The nefarious uses for it far outweigh any benefits.

Just have a link to an email address. Not your main one because webcrawlers will add it to spam lists within 10 seconds of it being on the site. Use a Google mail address perhaps.

Otherwise, a nice site. Would prefer to see image thumbs rather than cropped versions, but that's just MHO.

If I were you I'd learn low poly/games modelling ASAP, after that you may have chances at scoring a job as a modeller.

It depends on the other applicants but it'd be good enough to get you an interview.

Are you willing to relocate to Denmark?

Some nice photographs ! (I'm not currently hiring ;-)

If you want to get hired doing 3d art for games the days, you're gonna need more than that.

I would make a high poly model of a building and a creature or human, texture it with a high resolution texture, and then create a lower poly version of each of those. Then I would generate a normal map from the high res models for the low poly models, and texture and render them with it. Then I'd show off all those models and textures on my website and explain the process. Because that is what you will need to know how to do to make modern games. In my experience, being able to modeling people is especially important to the artists who will be looking at your resume and deciding to hire you. If you can model a person you can model anyhting, they'd say. But if you are terrible at modeling people, you still might be able to get a job modeling weapons and stuff like that, so all is not lost if you're terrible at anatomy. But showing that you can make those high and low poly models and make good textures, and can generate normal maps would be pretty important.

Ah, good, good so far! Seems I need more game content.
I thought so too.

FlameDuck, I'd relocate to any part of the world for most
any kind of work. I'd have no problems with that. I've got
a summer job in Malaysia next year and I'm pretty excited
about it. (I'll show you guys lots of photographs!)

And Noodle, I like your honesty, but what's your reason
for saying no? I'll be improving and designing this site
until no one can say 'no' ;) Your opinion would help me
get there.

Based on your site and its content, you still haven't grasped how to work with lighting very well when it comes to all of your artwork. Your 3D work, when compared to normal games (e.g., not small independent ones) is not as detailed nor does it have the same flow and composition from what I can see.

Most of your work looks generally 'scattered' or lacking design.

Your pencil work is nice, I'll give you that. Might be able to land a position as a concept artist if you work on how you design your art better. In most of your pieces there's too much going on, not allowing the eye to focus on what matters in the scene.

Thank you all. You've been very helpful.

Noodle, You really hit it on the nose. You really do know
what you're talking about. You just listed all of my weakest
areas, point-for-point. hehe.

Now that I know they are so obvious in my work, I can work
like madman to improve these spots.

Thanks again.

The crops of your photos, are better than your photos.

If you don't understand why, I wouldn't hire you.

I'm sure he's all broken up about that. :P
