Also, this was a pretty small asteroid, so it didn't threaten the human race.

Anything travelling at astronomical speeds, with enough mass to make it through the atmosphere, is potentially a threat to the human race.

Also why is it called a near miss? It missed. Wouldn't it be a near hit?
