I think California may finally be getting Diesels soon. Car manufacturers haven't been able to meet the emissions tests required for them here, so the only diesels you see are stinky ones from the 70's which are exempt or utility type vehicles. Around here natural gas is being used more and more in buses and other HGV's.
They really should make some attractive hybrids, the prius may be distinctive but its a butt ugly appliance, the Chevy Volt is big, bulky and aggressive looking, I often wonder if that will see the light of day.
Things are changing a lot since I first moved here 10 years ago though. back in 1998 I couldn't find a nice hatch anywhere, only thing going was the old Honda DX and Mazda MX3 unless you wanted to step back into the 80's or mid/late 70's which is never a good idea :)
