I tried Vista (SP1) based on suggestions by others here. But it only lasted a few days and I went back to XP SP2 since the majority of my software would not work on Vista. That aside, and being honest, I didn't notice any "speed issues". It "seemed" faster than XP SP2 on the same system. In contrast, XP SP3 was slower than XP SP2 and Vista SP1 on the same system.
I am not fond of the gaudiness of Vista's UI, but it is no worse than OSX or the latest version of Ubuntu. If I was using Vista, I would have to find a Norton Commander clone as I do not like the new version of Explorer. Contrary to an above comment, I liked the new version of MS Paint :)
