CRT screen??? It's 2008!!!

I use a 21" CRT on my dev PC. They're much better for art/photo work.

but in the US very few off-the-shelf cheap-ish DVD players are multi region

Same in the UK, but the vast majority can be made multi-region if you know what you're doing.
