I've played through the tribal stage so far. I got the galactic edition of Spore, which includes two documentaries, one Making of Spore and one National Geographics one. I've only watched the first one so far, which was pretty interesting.
So far I liked the first stage a lot. The graphics are very cool, and I loved that there were creatures 20 times your size that were after you. A good reason to panic.:)
Creature stage was okay, but got kind of boring after a while. It was all the same and not enough to do.
The tribal stage was more fun, with more stuff you could do, and more excitement. I played as a peacful tribe, but still had to fend of hostile neighbours from time to time. Even encountered a few huge creatures here that ate a couple of my tribe members. :)
While the game is not perfect, it is very VERY interesting from a technology and game design point of view.
