OpenGL 3 exists!

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/OpenGL 3 exists!

ATI and NVIDIA both have their place but the ATI one is clearly not in the OpenGL sector.

Their windows ogl support lacks, their OSX support is broken, don't know about linux as it is hard to tell something on driver quality if the OS itself has issues with half of my hardware.

I actually considered the 4870x2 or succssor for my next system somewhere in 09 with a nice nehelem quad+ cpu. Because the GTX280 is definitely not the way to go. Massive die size, ugly power consumption etc No chance.
Perhaps a "9800GX2" successor if it uses GDDR5 and is in a comparable price range.

While I'm biased towards Intel on the CPU side just because they offer the better performance/$ (AMD is great in low idle power consumption) for those things I need it for, I don't care too much about the manufacturer on the GPU end.
The only reason my current systems are NVIDIA is because back then NVIDIA was better and I wanted to work with CUDA.
But with OpenCL I think the reason to have NVIDIA or ATI for GPGPU will hopefully vanish.
