But there is - Windows. Statistics show that over 90% of people just browsing the Internet use Windows.
Well... yeah they have got 90% of the market so it figures. The story of exactly how they got to that position is old and its got nothing to do with quality. If it wasn't for dependency, clever marketing and the deals with manufacturers for bundling windows, that figure would look very different.
Most users wouldnt know the difference between windows osx and kde/gnome as long as when they switch it on it works and the "book" tells them to click here for this and here for that.
Answer me a question, can Linux do everything the average user needs, without using the console?
Well, it (in my case ubuntu) does everything i need and i do more than an 'average' user would.I use mine for:
-Office stuff,
-web stuff,
-programming (Bmax/C++),
-3D Modelling / Rendering,
-2D Artwork stuff, textures/bitmaps/photos.
-watching movies,
-playing MP3s,
-using my digital and movie cameras,
-home video editing,
-web development,
-chat / A/V comms,
-install applications,
-and some games.
(all of this i can do without the console if i have to, and no compiling in sight)
On the slightly more 'advanced' side:
-apache web server +sql+php
-imap mail server
-ftp server
-encrypted remote access with X forwarding.
-centralized NFS fileserver (which is accessable from all my pcs weather windows, linux or xbox)
-automated backup solution for the above.
(yes, you usually -need- the console for this stuff)
All this i can do just as comfortably as i can with windows, just without the annoyances. Everything is how i want it to be, its fast and stable. If it wasnt then whats the point? I would just use windows (which i still use for the B3D stuff and games (and at work of course)).
Whats wrong with the command line anyway, when im using windows i tend to use it a lot too (...and always have, as for some stuff its faster).
