I'm not saying you can't do anything without CSG, just that CSG makes a lot of things more accessible from a programming standpoint. At the base CSG is used in map building applications, CAD, and other modeling tools. But slowly, it will get up to the level for a realtime 3D API, just like physics got to the performance level that realtime applications require. I personally need CSG for my 3D game project.
