If you do invest in a large external HD, make sure it's got RAID 1 (mirroring). I recently discovered that my work has a 1TB drive, but it has striping not mirroring. One of the drives then died, this has resulted in a data recovery bill in excess of the price of two 1TB mirrored drives.
