he was first one appear there in right time and right place..and it doesnt make his games best ever.
I didn't say that. But if it hadn't been for DOOM, the PC would still be considered a fancy typewriter. It's not about having a good game. It's about bringing lots of things together. Technical excellence, competitive graphics, good gameplay and a viable shareware business. Either one of these, on it's own would not have been sufficient to dislodge the console dominance. HL2 serial is way better from any aspect in genre ID did
Dwarfs standing on the shoulders of giants. everything he said is obviously business related to ID
Obviously. Clue time: Making PC games is a business. If the platform is no longer comparatively profitable (blame Microsoft, blame ID, blame whoever, it doesn't really change the facts) companies are going to stop developing for it. Carmack will be stupid if he believe that he can sell same games again and again on PC..
And yet the single most successful PC game is the Sims, and all 7 or 8 expansions. The second most successful PC game is World of Warcraft, and it's expansion. So there is quite a fair bit of empirical evidence to suggest that you can indeed sell the same game again and again on the PC. 8 times for The Sims, and every single month in the case of World of Warcraft. more market room for the indies.
No actually. Companies like ID and EA operate in different markets than "indies". More likely it'll mean less market room for the indies, as the more "casual" or nichce game markets will shift to the consoles, along with the mainstream market. Primary candidates here are of course the Wii and XBox Live Arcade. No, Carmack is not my God.
Not mine either. But you still have to acknowledge what he's done for the PC.In other news the Amiga isn't dead either!
