I have a subversion server running on linksys nslu2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NSLU2), cracking little beast, silent, extremely power efficient. USB drive attached which powers down when not in use. This then backs up to a my media server once per day (if it detects any changes).

I've been using tortoise for a while, but I do suggest using it from the start of a project, I only started half way through and the repository is a bit of a mess :(
