Heh - most of you are taking this the wrong way.
It's got nothing to do with a 'Big Brother'/'police state' etc.
Who the hell is going to sift through billions of e-mails and text messages, etc?
They want this info for particular high-profile criminals.
We don't know who the terrorists, etc are - so they store everything.
If you go out and rob a bank and get caught, they will probably investigate all of your calls, e-mails and text messages, etc to find the rest of the gang.
They are not reading everything, unless you are a threat/criminal.
