I find that the "so called" tech support people's experience is limited to what ever they see on the computer in front of them.
And if you go to them with little or no knowledge they just fob you off.
The friends mother inlaw used to be with that other bunch of well known cowboys... Sky BB. Who supplied her with a re-branded Netgear DG834G, which....
1) Kept losing the connection and they fobbed her off by saying it was her computers/phone lines fault not the routers.
2) You couldn't up date the firmware (with netgears own and Sky's is non existant) because they hardcoded the connection settings.
You could get your user name and password if you opened the routers web interface in debug mode and used telnet in a command console to talk to the embeded linux OS ( as long as you know the commands and what your doing).
You could then re-flash your firmware with a Netgear's own update using the recovery tool supplied by netgear. This is risky as it will only work with Windows XP and some computers NIC's, as well as invalidate your Sky terms of service (It's best to buy a new router).
I just hope and pray that my Virgin Media Cable connection dosen't fail me, as I can see many many hours on the phone talking to hundreds's of people that know nothing of any thing.
EDIT: So far I've read lots of horror stories with PO BB. From wrong equipment turnunig up and hassle getting put right, no connection, no email the list goes on....
