I work as a sound producer in a studio (apart from PL/1 programing for OS3090), and a good condenser cardioid microphone is essential.
You may need a pre-amplifier for the mic and a good AD/DA conversor for the audio. This is not as expensive as it may sound. You can get a good external card such as the M-Audio core solo, wich has decent AD/DA conversors and a integrated microphone pre-amp. A good and cheap condenser microphone could be a Rodhe MK1
Obviously multi-channel recording would need a milti-channel AD/DA conversor and that is a lot more expensive. depending on what you're after, I would go to a pro studio. If it is just home recording of MIDI + voice or arcustic guitars or piano, the core solo interface could do the job.
