Linux in Windows

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Linux in Windows

I've been messing with Windows XP 64bit in VMWare on Fedora Core 8 64bit, with mostly great success. CPU performance is around the same as when I ran Windows as the primary OS when I tested it with Cinebench. Though I have gotten no graphics acceleartion working. There's supposed to be experimental graphics acceleration support there, but maybe that's only for the Windows version of VMWare or the 32 bit one. :(

So for BlitzMax testing, it's really not that good. Though check out http://www.cs.toronto.edu/~andreslc/xen-gl/ VMGL, which gives you accelerated OpenGL in X11 based guest os's (Linux and co). Don't know if the host needs to be Linux too, or if it can be Windows.

On Intel CPU's you may need to go into the bios and turn on Virtualiztaion Technology to get it to work at all.

Wacom support is possible, but difficult to get working. I had to install wdaemon (v.0.14, v0.13 and below have a memory leak, fedora repos only has v.0.12), and configure that. Read the readme file that comes with it and google it. Now I can swith between using Wacom in Fedora and VMWare, by choosing it from the VMWare menu. Though, I still have a bug that I need to track down, as Fedora sometimes looses it's connection with it after multiple back and forth switching.

VirtualBox looks very promising, I'm planning to test it out next.
