Different poeple have different reasons.
I know there was a time I wanted to screw around with a control that could capture video. The only thing I could find that would even come close to what I wanted was $1000. I just wanted to play with it, maybe make my own little app. $1000 for that is just nuts. I never did find a pirated copy of that control :( Would have grabbed it if I could have found it.
Of course, I would have never produced a commercial product with a pirated control.
I have been known to grab a pirated game every now and then. And when the game deserves it, I buy it. It is very upsetting to purchase a game and find it just isn't hwat you were hoping for afetr paying $50+.
I even used a pirated version of BlitzMax for the first 2 weeks until I decided I liked it and might actually do something with it. I then purchased it.
If I want to just dabble with something for an hour, I may look for a pirated copy.
With XBox 360/Wii games, I rent them and play them for a week or so to get an idea if I want to spend $60. Why is it that just an hour of a demo should give me that satisfaction? Many games get bad after the beginning.
If something is definitely worth the money, I will pay for it. I have no problem with that. In fact, it is almost a bigger compliment when a person who could have your game for free actually buys it. I did buy your Fairway Golf game :)
