1st let me try and explain how the shadow system worked on the screen shot from the Sun 15th January 2006.
The shade sprite is 64 frames rendered with a light source rotating around it. The shadow is also a 2 color render of the car onto a background. The shadow was a render from the same light, but the car and ground was given one colour.
Then it was just a matter of rotating the sprite to point the correct way, then pick the correct shade sprite to use and shadow sprite.
It worked a treat. I don't know if this system will be of use if I go the 3d route.
As for the physics, I will cross that bridge when I come to it!.
