There are two ends of the spectrum on this, freedom (drop all your naivety from the word freedom and just assume it means we as the consumer are being trusted) and restriction. Some would like greater freedom (pirates, open source, etc.), and some would like greater restriction (various industries, developers, etc.). Going to the far end of either spectrum will kill you, this much is obvious.

So, Grey and the like, where on the spectrum do you think is best?

I stand a little away from the middle, leaning towards freedom. Honestly, I can't stop piracy (neither can you, and if you state otherwise then you'd better have mind control powers), so if I were to develop something, I would probably only implement very basic security- a serial key, for example, is the most I would ever use. The common end user, by now, is used to this sort of absurd restriction and I have no problem with the idea of feeding it to them. Beyond that, I'm more or less going to toss it out in the world and expect it to kill and eat the nearest living creature to survive.

You see, my software would not just come with copy protection, but hardware and artificial intelligence. This AI would adapt to its environment and eventually destroy the world, including the processing of us organ sacks for energy somehow... getting off track here.

My point was that I don't think piracy is affecting you as much as you'd like to think it is. I don't know why you'd like to think it is, maybe you just want it to be a huge problem that's killing your sales as some way of proving to yourself that your games aren't terrible. Except they are, and you should be ashamed of yourself for trying to blame other people, pirates or not, for your games being terrible.

Well apparently there is no 'higher truth' or God, so piracy is merely a 'point of view'.
Not sure what a god has to do with this. I'd advise keeping religion out of this, considering it will do nobody any good to say your god's cojones are bigger than their god's.
