I bought a creative external soundcard for my laptop. Then I use the optical or coax output to feed a Beresford standalone DAC which also has a built in headphone amp and use a pair of Seinheiser open backed phones. I bought the phones years ago and they still sound brilliant. The DAC costs about 100 off ebay and the soundcard about 20 pounds.
In order to avoid potential bozoism just avoid closed backed designs!!
