As a user of windows 1.0 through vista I can honestly say that in the 20 odd years of using windows and the 3 years of learning and "crafting" my linux setup I know where i am happiest.

Linux is great, its faster, smoother, more secure, cheaper, blah blah blah, but isnt for everyone. Linux is great as long as you have yourself or someone nearby that knows what they are doing to do any system stuff or installations.

From a basic user point of view (a user with no permission to do anything) linux IS superior because it just works 100% and nothing can change it or break it, they are given the software needed to do their job by admin and the user just uses it, it just works, full stop.

For home users however, (if not technically minded, have bad general PC skills or no patience to learn something new), linux may be a bad choice as its not as free and easy as windows (well its free but you know what i mean :) It is still more difficult to configure for the average joe and prehaps isnt for him, unless of course all joe wants is what say.. ubuntu provides "out of the box"

(Unfortunate really as (s)he has to live with all the bollox that comes with windows, however "friendly" and "easy")

-edit-
@evak: Windows software like Photoshop, PSP (jasc), MSO (why when u got oo.o but still, each to their own.. :) can run fine under linux, as well as a lot of major games.
