Linux's foothold on the desktop can come as a result of the urge to integrate desktop and handheld applications. Something really cool about Linux-based handhelds like the Nokia N810 is that a lot of the software on them is exactly the same software I am using right now on my laptop, maybe with a different front-end. That is a level of portability here we do not see with other software, and one which is made quite easy partly thanks to the fantastic GUI toolkits that have become standard on the Linux desktops.
There are many nice things that can be gained from the similarities of all these Linux-based software platforms, including really smooth synchronization of everything via d-bus.
