I run Redhat Fedore Core within VMWare on my XPHome machine. Works very well for what I need it for, despite being a 'virtual' machine.
Yes MSoft provides a good product line up, but there is a cost involved. Linux, whatever your flavour is free.... unless you opt for the Enterprise version of some releases.
