I'd argue that the advent of modern NPR rendering techniques now allow 3d to compete with 2d on a non-realistic stylistic level too. Ratchet and Clank on the PS3 is an example of this. Anyway it's not about shaders and polygon counts, pixel art or scanned paintings, it's all about style, which has always been the case. In other words, it's not the tools that matter, it's what you do can with them. Do painters argue about their brushes?
