i was un aware that the jim carey movie was a remake ... from your quote it bares little to the german 'original' save for having 23 in the title (even imdb makes it seem even more distant), it could have been called anything ... even catch-22 was going to be called catch-someothernumber (18 i think) but their was another book with 18 in it and publisher/authour decided a name change ... or else wed be saying its a catch18 situation
from what im willing to divulge without giving too much away
jim carey gets a book for his birthday 3rd feb (2/3) called 23 that charts this detective sucumming to OCD about the number 23 after the suicide of a woman with the same OCD ... as if the 'curse' was spread to him
parts of the book remind carey of his life so he now finds 23 everywhere and starts to develop OCD over 23

You should watch the original german movie "23 - nichts ist wie es scheint" (23- nothing is the way it seems) that probably touches the topic a little. A nice movie about some hackers from the chaos computer club, based on a true story about a hacker who mysteriously died on a may 23. (Named Tron)

The movie's plot is based on the true story of a group of young computer hackers from Hannover, Germany. In the late 1980s the orphaned Karl Koch invests his heritage in a flat and a home computer.
