Clearly I have thought over it, although I failed to mention that I have tried your method many iterations ago ( and yes, only on vehicles within a certain range )and it just doesn't look good. Note also that the projectiles have shadows too. Raw speed is the aim here so I'll stick with being un-silly thanks.
