Two big problems with wifi is that the response times are much more erratic than using a wired connection, and it's more prone to packet loss thanks to the increased potential for interference.
both of those things can greatly affect the ability to play online games, which typically need a very steady connection with very low response times.
(a nearby 2.4GHz wireless phone or a microwave can really wreck havoc with your wifi connection. And even if you don't use any of those, your immediate neighbours very likely are)

I use 802.11g here at my house. I play (used to) World of Warcraft using it, I play many FPS games online, and my XBox 360 has wireless and it plays on Live just fine. Wireless nowadays is pretty bullet proof. I have cordless phones in my house, I have a microwave, and I have two daughters, both who never get off of the phone or their cell phones and I do not have any troubles with my wireless connection dropping, ever.
I think you either haven't tried it in a couple years, or you are just repeating falsehoods you have read on the Internet somewhere else. I have been a Network Administrator for 17 years, and if my Internet Connection had any problems, I would know, and I would fix it or replace it with something that was reliable.
