I had a game which used that wheel! Legacy of the Ancients. Cool game that was. You'd travel from town to town through the animated paintings in a "galactic museum", and you could rob banks and have a bunch of guards attack you, which early on meant near certain death but later was manageable. The fake 3D dungeons were some of the best looking on the C64, far better than Bard's Tale, and exploring towns was a top down affair like the world map, so it was a lot less confusing than the attempt they made to make a 3D town in Bard's Tale.
I don't even want to think about how long the loading times must have been though. I've since forgotten how much time it took, but a few years back I hooked up my C64 to load a game called Bounder and it took about 30 minutes to get to the title screen.
