I don't see the problem as a question of what weapons are used. For example in real life, the governments of USA and also many european countries are in a mass hystery about terrorists, the checks in the airports take over 3 hours. However, what if the next terrorist attack is done by a naked Wing-Tsun master, he would easily kick out a metal door of the pilot's cabin and kill the pilot barehanded. I think the real problem is the source. We should eliminate all violence by making it not wanted by anyone. If USA would accept the fact that they are just one little country among 194 ( http://geography.about.com/cs/countries/a/numbercountries.htm ) other countries in the world, that would be a good start.
Violence in schools could be also dramatically lowered by having teachers who are competent and up-to-date, and not causing anger among their students. After all, when you get a job, nobody ever asks you for your school diploma, and if someone does, you better find a better job where they value your amateur skills and not your cheating skills. The good thing about school is that it teaches you discipline and written language skills, the rest is quite useless. The discipline comes to shine when you write bigger games, and the language skills when you communicate with people on the boards.
