GFK:
I was one chatting with a wise man high atop a mountain. I asked him:
"Oh wise man! I have no faith! How could my games sell at all with the thousands of free flash games available out there? Why bother? I can't possibly make any money at it! Yet you do! Please give me enlightenment!"
The wise man replied:
"My son! If people like a game, they buy it! It doesn't matter if there are 50 other games out there just like it. If they're playing your game and they enjoy it, they're not going to go looking for other games like that which are free, they shall pull out their credit card, and they shall order thine game post haste!"
I contemplated upon this bit of wisdom and realised it must be true, for there are many many developers out there making money doing this, even though you can find pretty much any kind of game you'd like to play out there for free or use, people are more than happy to part with their money on a whim. If I'm playing an episode of Sam and Max and I'm having fun with it, I'm not gonna look for another free advanture game. And I'm not even gonna head to ebay to find the original game to play that for cheap. I'm gonna buy the next episode right there and then.
So it doesn't matter how big PopCap gets or how many games they make. There are a zillion games out there already. A few dozen more each year isn't gonna put a dent in that.
