Windows Vista users please read

I would do the checking on what system you are like this:

1) Use the conditional compiling for Windows, Linux, Mac.
2) On Windows, do a "ver" command and check the output.
3) On Linux and MacOS X, do a "cat /proc/version" (or just read the text file /proc/version directly).
