Honest opinions on Vista

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Honest opinions on Vista

I turned the services back on yesterday and all seems to be well. Even Nero works now (it didn't a couple of days ago).

I think Vista is still 6 months away from being a 'comfortable' OS. XP has been comfortable to use for a long while. It works, it's fast, 99% of people have more than enough RAM to keep it from paging itself to death and everyone knows someone who can fix any type of problem they may encounter whilst using it, games work on and are designed for it, it supports all needed technologies (firewire, usb2, removable storage, RAID) and it can be reasonably secured with inexpensive or free software.

Vista offers no real advantage in the realm of support for new technology (iSCSI, seriously?), much fewer than 99% of people have enough RAM to prevent games and large apps from paging to disk and if problems are encountered it means a fair amount of Googling. Generally though, it does work and it is fast (for a given configuration). The level of trust ascribed to it 'just working' seems to be low, which is an oobstacle overcome only by the passage of time.

So, I give it 6 more months before we're all happy (or at least ambivalent) to switch from XP.
