Building your own, like you said, isn't that hard, especially if it's as simple as BB's, and if you don't know PHP/SQL, it's a good opportunity to give yourself a kick in the butt and learn it!
I know PHP and MySQL very well actualy :) its more a "time" issue. Just got so much things todo. phpBB is a bit to complicated, i think punBB would be a good alternative.
