What I don't like about open-source forums is the fact that malicious people have access to the source code and can use it against you, as they can find exploits, bugs, etc.
And if you are using a popular free forum, you are most likely to become a target for spambots.
Building your own, like you said, isn't that hard, especially if it's as simple as BB's, and if you don't know PHP/SQL, it's a good opportunity to give yourself a kick in the butt and learn it!
