About 3 or 4 years ago, I released a niche program as donationware. After 5 or 6 months, and around three hundred downloads, I had one guy send me $5.
I then released a new version of the same program, with a couple of extra features (nothing groundbreaking), and made it shareware. Within the first week, I had 10 people buy it for $9.95 a pop. Many more followed after that.
