well, wages do vary (obviously) but the goverment sets out the minimum you can legally pay someone, depending on their age:

copied and pasted from UK Inland Revenue site
£5.35 per hour for workers aged 22 years and older
A development rate of £4.45 per hour for workers aged 18-21 inclusive
£3.30 per hour for all workers under the age of 18, who are no longer of compulsory school age.

so,if someone aged 22+ works 39 hours (no overtime) they will muster £10850 a year, which means they are in the 22% income tax bracket, which will leave them £8463 a year (but this is before any National Insurance contributions are taking into account)

baring in mind, people that are on minimum wage usually have jobs that do involve long hours and plenty of overtime, such as security guards etc etc or for people who just want a 'second income',like cleaners/bar staff

even manual labour could start at minimum wage, but thats for workers who are'nt experienced, usually, their wages are topped up to roughly £6.50-£7 p/h after a year or so on building sites

The uk has been proven to be the workhorse of europe (thats why they are probably as keen a mustard to get us in there),we work longer hours and have less holidays than everyone else

because at these prices, weve got to! :-]
