I dislike the visual clutter of so many icons. There comes a point when hunting for the icon is slower than opening the program and loading it
At some point, yes -- but you can definitely bring order among a bunch of icons as well.
I have all my image editing software lined up together, video encoding software together, internet applications together, utilities together, etc.
when I want to launch a program it's a fraction of a second to navigate to the type of program I want, and then it's just a choice between a few icons -- it's not like I have to hunt all over the desktop to locate a particular program.
How come people generally don't have many icons on their desktop?
I've got 90 icons on my desktop - is this bad?

It can be -- under win98 I had a couple of games that had the nasty habit on resizing & leaving the desktop at 640x480 after exiting the game, which at best jumbled up the location of all icons, and at worst didn't have enough space to show all of them. :-?
On my current machine I pretty much have icons running along the top, bottom, left and right sides of the screen, but the center is left blank.
