@neilo, yep - sounds like warped disks, I'd a similar problem on my motor, luckily I'd paid a garage to replace them 4months ago and they warped under heavy braking. They replaced them for free, resolved the shuddering - which was sporadic.
regarding your cross platform engine, I can do a (small) amount of beta testing of your cross platform within fc4 (from within vmware) if you need any doing. All I've really done so far within FC4 is compile C.....
