From experience of working in a shared coding environment (a team of 5 people) the best thing is to use software that allows you to check-out (take an exclusive copy of) files, and check-in (upload your changes).
However I've only ever used MS Sourcesafe, and I think there must be better software (such as CVS) out there.
These days I code alone - it's at least 50% faster :)
