Something like Stardock Central gives a much better end-user experience than Steam IMHO. Steam just seems to do too much unnecessary jumping through hoops in the name of security (read: paranoia).
But seriously things like Steam aren't the reason you're seeing less PC games on the store shelves. It doesn't help much that's there's only maybe 10 PC developers around any more, because all the good PC / Mac developers (DMA Design, Bungie, Psygnosis, Bioware, etc.) get snatched up by the likes of Sony and Microsoft to develop "console exclusives".
The PC games market is a casualty of console war. It's not like Raven, Relic and Blizzard can turn out new games quickly enough to meet the demand.
