BlitzMax is very good at what it does so far: 2D and GUI. If minib3d isn't enough for you then you should really, really consider the new Torque engine. I'm already saving up for it (Mac version isn't out yet) because a friend of mine got it and I could take a look at it: it's awesome! This is what I call an complete 3D game engine =)
