I got 1280x1024 here and about 40% of the page width is taken by the black bars.
I can see why he chose the fixed width, but daaaaamn.
Regarding a redesign, well, not much I can really help out with there, since I ain't exactly a pro with them, still currently in the web-design stages of experimentation, basically, playing around with different layout setups (using good ol' CSS) and see what I can come up with that's appealing.
