Yeah tell him you are a one man band, mouths to feed, crap car or whatever and make him an offer and say you can't go any higher, it's more than you can afford anyway blah blah and see if he takes it. Go a bit lower than you "real" price you are prepared to pay in case of haggle. Get a proper "license" statement from him saying you can use it for whatever (but not resell it).
