Windows XP as my Desktop. Why?
Adobe CS2. 3DS Max. Mindjet MindManager. I like MS Office (so sue me).
I would rather pay for well written software that works then get someones WIP for free.
I have tried the Gimp (several times) and I simply do not like it
I have tried Blender. same.
I have OpenOffice.org installed on all my windows boxes but I never use it.
All Major PC Games run on XP. Mac and Linux are niche.
I like Ubuntu for a server. In Fact, I Love Linux. I like that Linux Exists and I even Like to think that Bill Gates despises it. But I just don't use it all that often.
I love Macs (they are adorable) butfor now I will stick with windows xp.
btw. I have spent about $3,000 for all my software over the past 2-3 years. (yes, I buy licenses. What a concept!)
Now, There ARE some FOSS apps that I feel are irreplaceable. I am a HUGE fan of Python. I use it for linux scripts as well as for my windows calculator. (interactive command line is just lovely!)
I predominately use Firefox. It just feels better than IE (all Versions) but there are times when I have to use IE for work.
Overall, I feel that the Opportunity cost of going with the Free/Open Source alternatives of the pricey apps (3DS, Pshop, MS Office) would be much more than the $3,000 I mentioned
just my $0.02
