Of course it's affected by gravity. The controller knows it's orientation and how fast it is moving and in which direction. What it doesn't necessarily know is where it is. Games using the pointer function look at the sensor bar to work out where the control is relatively - but this only works if the controller can see the sensor bar (no use for stuff like Tennis & Bowling).
