a word about quality though. in my experience, a 256x256 *.PNG looks better than some 512x512 pixel *.jpg's

I think they are uncompressed and are essentially the same within BlitzMAx but the PNG's just look better.

this is my opinion...on my PC (1-Rather High end Desktop and an older Laptop (Radeon 9xxx chip)
